With the increase of natural disasters it is the best advice that you, as the boy scout motto states, "BE PREPARED". To start, it is always a good idea to keep a warm jacket in your car. Down is great for keeping the body core warm. Wool will keep you warm even when wet. The idea is to not allow stress into the situation and keeping warm will go along ways in establishing peace of mind. We have learned that the following are a few things that will benefit during a disaster.
5 C's of Survival
Cutting tool - Our best advice is a knife. Made of durable steel it will remain sharp under difficult situations.
Container - Plastic is best because of low weight considerations and can often be found for free.
Cover - Cover will help to keep you warm and dry. It also allows you to trap drinking water.
Combustible - Waterproof matches, lighter, magnesium fire starter, or firesteel. In relationship to the others my favorite is fine mesh steel wool and a nine volt battery. Combined you will have quick fire starting capabilities and it's easy on the finances. Fire will alleviate much stress and keeps many pests away.
Cordage - Parachute cord can be used for many purposes.
The following are additional items that will aid in finding comfort.
Clothing
Socks - In case you have to walk distances.
Comfortable Walking Shoes
Food Storage - We can generally last three weeks without food.
Water - The body can last only three days without water.
Soap - Leading up to the government takeover in Germany by Adolph Hitler, soap was a commodity of great value.
Medical Supplies - 1st Aid Kits
Blisters - Thin blister pads or moleskin.
Sprains - Assorted elastic bandage, athletic tape.
Wound - Sterile bandage, band-aid, tape.
If you learn and are prepared, you will not fear.
